Parliament Moves to Scrap OSP: Ayariga & Dafeamekpor to File Bill

Parliament is moving ahead with plans to abolish the OSP. Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor have announced their intention to file a bill to dissolve the Office.

Ayariga says the OSP has received significant resources over the years — yet delivered little in terms of prosecuting corruption. He argues that its duties should revert to the Attorney‑General’s Department, contending that the OSP has failed to meet expectations.

Dafeamekpor has expressed concerns over alleged abuse of power by the OSP, citing the recent detention of a private legal practitioner, which he described as “untenable.

The move has reignited heated debate: supporters of OSP warn against hasty dismantling, arguing that the institution remains essential for independent anti-corruption oversight. Critics say continued funding without results isn’t sustainable.

It’s now up to Parliament — and public opinion — to decide whether the OSP remains part of Ghana’s fight against corruption, or gets phased out in favor of another approach.
