A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Legal Directorate, Ishaq Ibrahim Esq., has raised concerns about the current feeding allowance allocated to inmates in Ghana’s prisons.
Speaking on the issue, the lawyer questioned how authorities expect prisoners to be adequately fed on a daily allowance of GH¢3, arguing that such an amount is insufficient to provide basic nutrition.
According to him, the low feeding allocation could have broader implications for the country’s correctional system. He suggested that poor living conditions, including inadequate meals, may worsen the rehabilitation process rather than reform inmates.
Ishaq Ibrahim emphasized that prisons should not only serve as places of punishment but also as institutions focused on reformation and reintegration into society.
He therefore called for authorities to review the feeding allowance and improve conditions within the prison system to ensure inmates are treated humanely while serving their sentences.
