Interior Minister Explains Government’s Decision to Rename NIB as BNI

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has outlined the government’s reasons for seeking to rename the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) back to its former name, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

According to the Minister, the proposed change is intended to restore the agency’s original identity and enhance clarity in its operations. He indicated that the move forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s security and intelligence framework.

The NIB, formerly known as the BNI, serves as one of Ghana’s key state security institutions responsible for intelligence gathering and national security operations. The name was officially changed to the National Intelligence Bureau following legislative reforms in recent years.

However, government officials now argue that reverting to BNI would align the institution with its traditional recognition and public familiarity, while maintaining its core mandate of safeguarding national security.

Further details are expected as the proposal undergoes the necessary legal and administrative processes.
