Despite over 180,000 young Ghanaians applying to join the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), only 1,000 recruits will be admitted this year, says Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka.
Why So Few?
The minister explained that while the high number of applications reflects strong interest in public service and youth unemployment challenges, the GIS has limited training and accommodation capacity. Currently, only 1,000 new officers can be trained under this exercise.
“The total of over 180,000 young men wanted to join the Ghana Immigration Service, but the Service’s infrastructure can only support the training of about 1,000 new officers,” Muntaka said.
Implications for Youth and Public Service
This recruitment exercise highlights the intense competition for security sector jobs and underscores the need for expanded opportunities and capacity building in Ghana’s public institutions.
Looking Forward
While only a small fraction of applicants will succeed, the GIS recruitment underscores the importance of investing in infrastructure, training, and workforce planning to meet growing demand.
