Government Renames Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport

The Government has officially renamed Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport.

The announcement, made on Monday, February 23, 2026, marks a significant change to the identity of Ghana’s main international gateway. The airport, located in the capital city, Accra, has long served as the country’s primary hub for international travel and aviation operations.

While details of the rationale for the renaming have not yet been fully outlined, the decision is expected to spark public and political discussions, given the historical significance of the former name.

Kotoka International Airport was named after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in Ghana’s political history. The change to Accra International Airport signals a shift toward a more location-based naming convention.

Further clarification from government officials is anticipated regarding the legal and administrative processes behind the renaming.
