Chief Justice Rejects Seven Petitions Seeking Removal of EC Chair Jean Mensa and Deputies

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has dismissed seven separate petitions that sought the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies from office.

The decision, announced on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, effectively ends the current attempts to trigger constitutional proceedings aimed at removing the leadership of the Electoral Commission.

Although the specific details of the petitions have not been publicly outlined, the applications reportedly called for the removal of the EC Chair and her deputies over undisclosed concerns. Under Ghana’s constitutional framework, such petitions must undergo a preliminary review before any formal investigative process can be initiated.

By rejecting the petitions, the Chief Justice has determined that the applications do not meet the required legal threshold to proceed further.

The Electoral Commission remains a central institution in Ghana’s democratic governance, responsible for organizing and supervising elections nationwide. As such, any effort to challenge its leadership often draws significant public and political interest.

With the dismissal of the petitions, Jean Mensa and her deputies remain in office, while attention now turns to whether the petitioners will pursue any additional legal avenues.
